The Touchmark Foundation was founded to enhance the well-being of seniors, a population traditionally underserved in mainstream philanthropy.Through the Foundation and it's residential communities, Touchmark gains insight on the most pressing needs and emerging trends in the senior population as well as implementing programs to meet those needs. In addition, The Touchmark Foundation awards scholarships to support students pursuing degrees in nursing. They focus specifically on a special effort to increase the number of nurses available to teach tomorrow's nurses. The funds raised from the annual golf tournament go to support these scholarships.
Walk us through the planning process.
Normally for an event like this, it's best to start 7 or 8 months ahead of time. In this case, we started only 3 months out. This made it difficult to get the sponsorship we had hoped for. We focused on our vendors for sponsorship, both at the local and national level. We sent out a mailing for both previous and potential sponsors. We also had a committee, although it was only four people this year. With all of these obstacles in planning, we were very grateful for the online component which really made our job much easier.
Did you do any advertising to get participants?
We sent out a large email blast to the participants of the previous tournament and posted information on our organization's website.
How did DoJiggy help with the planning and success of your event?
The online component was essential. We were able to see when a sponsorship came in right away, which was really nice. DoJiggy is an amazing tool for keeping track of everything. The reports are helpful and easy to use. We merely had to print our transaction report and send it off to the accounting department. The overall management of the event was much easier to facilitate by having everything in one place.
Tell us about your success. Did you accomplish your goals?
We have really felt the affect of the struggling economy in the last few years. We did not even hold the tournament last year because of low response. This year, with the online capabilities, we were able to keep our costs low and easily reach out to sponsors and participants. Although we had less sponsorships than in previous years, we were still able to get over 100 participants and raise over $13,000. We were striving to break even this year, and we were certainly able to do that!
Do you have any advice for other organizations?
Start planning early! The ability to gain support from sponsors is a big benefit for a tournament. This is achieved with earlier advertising and solicitation. Although a learning curve still exists for some in getting used to the online registration, it is certainly the wave of the future for tournament management.
