Tell us about your cause.
The mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Virginia (BBBS) is to make an impact on the lives of children and youth and to assist them in becoming confident, competent and caring individuals by providing them with caring and responsible adult mentors. Matching dedicated volunteers with deserving children is what we do best. In 2009, we provided mentors to approximately 500 children throughout the Central Virginia area. By matching a volunteer with a child in need, we not only give that child hope for his or her future, but we create a culture of giving back to the community. Through the efforts of our volunteers, we change lives… for the better!
What kind of special event fundraising do you do to support your mission?
We have two big fundraisers every year. One is the national BBBS fundraiser, Bowl For Kids’ Sake, a bowl-a-thon where participants raise pledges. As a thank you, we provide free bowling, t-shirts and lots of prizes. We used DoJiggy to help support our Bowl For Kids’ Sake event which we have been holding in the community for over 35 years. The other event is a golf tournament & auction that we hold in July each year.
Walk us through the planning process.
Each of the fundraisers is different, but generally speaking, there is a committee formed for each event comprised of board and staff members. They tackle areas of logistics, marketing/promotion, sponsorships, participant recruitment, and prizes/auction items.
Did you reach out to local sponsors?
Yes! They make up a large percentage of our revenues for each fundraising event.
Did you do any advertising to get participants?
Yes, there were posters hung locally throughout the community, there was a Facebook page created and email marketing to our constituent base. A local news station provided a PSA and a local radio station provided commercials as a sponsored item.
How did DoJiggy help with the planning and success of your event?
DoJiggy helped us with our Bowl For Kids’ Sake event by managing our online registration and pledge process. The previous two years we had used a different service, and due to cost increase, we made the switch. DoJiggy was not only more cost effective, but we found it simpler to customize and manage.
Tell us about your success…How many participants? how much did you raise? Did you accomplish your goals?
Fundraising is tough for many organizations these days. However, we did reach our goal and raised just under $60,000. That goal was much less than in previous years, but if we had not offered the online registration, I doubt we would have made our goal.
Do you have any advice for other organizations?
The only advice I would offer is to make sure that there is a dedicated staff member to manage the website and be available for any questions or issues that arise with participants. Learn the DoJiggy system inside and out! Unfortunately, we had two people responsible for the site and pledges, as one was part time and the other had other responsibilities and it created more work for both and constant double checking and reviewing of information. Having one person manage all of it would have worked much better for our organization. Otherwise, the price was within our budget and made it possible for our organization to offer online registration for our fundraising event. Customer service was ALWAYS very helpful and responded to questions immediately. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience as a first time user!Return to Customer Stories
