Tell us about your cause.
The Westford Academy in Massachusetts (WA) is a learning institution committed to promoting integrity and critical thinking, while fostering tolerance and life long learning in an ever changing global society. The Boosters is a non-profit organization that raises money to support athletic programs in school. We provide all the trophies, banners, and awards as well as much needed equipment. We support not only the teams themselves, including Swimming, Golf, Soccer, Gymnastics, Lacrosse,Track,Baseball, Basketball, Cheerleading and Football, but also have provided concussion software for the athletic trainer as well as video equipment to be shared by all of the teams. We provide scholarships for college to athletes from every sport. This year, 38 scholarships were awarded to deserving seniors.
What kind of special event fundraising do you do to support your mission?
The Boosters have a variety of events throughout the year: golf tournaments, dances, concerts, silent auctions, and more. Due to the success of our annual golf tournaments and the New England Patriots vs the Westford Community Basketball games, we were able to donate $10,000 to the Westford Community Fields Project for the purpose of contributing towards the construction of a turf field. With WA being a member of the highly competitive Dual County League, this turf is essential to our athletes.
Walk us through the planning process.
We are currently staffed with 25 or more volunteers that meet on a biweekly schedule during the year. We discuss, plan, and execute the fundraising activities and disburse funds to the athletic programs. We select scholarship recipients and schedule an annual recognition banquet. The committee is responsible for reaching out to local sponsors to support the events and promotional advertising to attract participants.
How did DoJiggy help with the planning and success of your event?
We used GolfRegistrations this year for the first time and were very pleased. The software allows for a very organized approach to fundraising and event management. We especially liked the fact that the public site remains live for one year. Our sponsors loved that their name would be ‘virtual’ for the entire year and not just one 5-hour tournament,to be forgotten afterwards until the next year.
Tell us about your success. Did you accomplish your goals?
We had 55 players this year, which was down from 85 last year. Although we had a smaller turn out, we were still able to raise enough money to fund six scholarships.
Do you have any advice for other organizations?
Buy the software! It will save so much time and will allow for a very organized tournament or fundraising endeavor.
